ipe' (ee-pay) n. A dense hardwood tree that grows in South American and the Lesser Antilles.
IPE' also know as Brazilian Walnut, is know in South America under many local names such as Amapa(Mexico), Cortez(Honduras,Nicaragua,CostaRica) Guayacan(Panama), Guayacan polvillo(Columbia), Flor Amarillo(Venezuela), Madera negra(Ecquador), Tahauari(Peru), IPE'(Brazil), and Lapacho negro(Paraguay,Argentina). It is known to be the best available decking material for is durability, stability, and naturally beautiful appearance. IPE' has a straight fine grain and is naturally a rich dark brown color that softens to a grey when left unfinished. IPE' has a dense cell structure (all heart wood) and does not require water sealers. It can also be stained to maintain it color or obtain a gloss finish against all weathering. Its surface remains smooth, with no splinters and maintains a consistent seasonal temperature. IPE' is self protecting, remaining un-deteriorated by pests, decay, termites and marine borers, and is naturally fire resistant. IPE' forests are managed, and regenerate naturally by both seeding and replanting. It is non-toxic to mammals and the environment, unlike lumbers treated by chemicals. Because of this dense cell structure, IPE' resists fire and has obtained a NFPA Class-A and Class-1 rating, equal that of steel and concrete. Using IPE' for your decking is the environmentally responsible choice over pressure-treated lumbers, which contains a variety of toxins and chemicals. |
